Your Apple Watch Knows More About You Than Your Doctor — What Happens to That Data When You Die?

Three Years of Your Heart, Gone

Your Apple Watch has been recording your heart rate every five minutes for the last three years. It tracked your sleep during the months of anxiety after your father died. It flagged an irregular heartbeat before your cardiologist ever did. It mapped your recovery from surgery, breath by breath, step by step, day by day.

If you die tomorrow, your family almost certainly cannot access any of it.

This isn't just a data problem. It's your story — the intimate, biological record of your life — locked inside a corporation's servers with no legal heir to claim it.

What Your Wearable Actually Knows

Modern health wearables have evolved far beyond step counters. Your device likely holds:

  • Continuous heart rate data going back years
  • ECG recordings that may have flagged cardiac irregularities
  • Blood oxygen levels (SpO2) tracked during sleep and activity
  • Sleep staging data — REM cycles, quality, disturbances tracked over months
  • Activity and workout logs with GPS routes
  • Daily temperature trends
  • Stress and recovery metrics derived from heart rate variability
  • Menstrual cycle data — possibly the most intimate record of all

This is not abstract. This is data cardiologists value. It's data insurance companies want. It tells a story about your health that your own GP probably doesn't have access to.

And in the wrong hands, it's data that could affect your surviving family — influencing insurance applications, employment decisions, or even legal disputes.

The Legal Reality: Your Health Data Is Not an Inheritance

Here's the uncomfortable truth: in most European countries, health data collected by a wearable does not automatically transfer to your heirs the way a bank account or house does.

Apple Health data is tied to your Apple ID. Apple's privacy framework, while strong, treats your health data as irrevocably personal. When you die, heirs can apply through Apple's Digital Legacy programme — but Apple decides what gets shared. ECG data, medication logs, and health records may still be withheld.

Fitbit (owned by Google) takes a similar approach. Your account enters limbo after death. Google's inactive account policies can permanently delete your data — within 18 months in some cases.

Garmin Connect stores your activity history on Garmin's servers. Without explicit account credentials, your family cannot retrieve your health records after your death.

The GDPR complicates this further. Health data is a "special category" of personal data with heightened protections — which means the privacy rules that protect you in life can work against your family after you're gone.

Why Your Family Might Need This Data

Before dismissing this as a niche concern, consider these scenarios:

Scenario 1: Your father dies suddenly. Your mother wants to understand whether his heart condition was hereditary — critical information for your own health and your children's. Three years of Apple Watch ECG recordings might answer that question. She cannot access them.

Scenario 2: You're a long-distance runner who uses Garmin. You die in an accident. Your life insurer argues a pre-existing condition contributed to your death. Your Garmin data could prove otherwise. Your estate cannot retrieve it.

Scenario 3: Your family wants to understand what your final months felt like. Your Fitbit tracked the nights you couldn't sleep, the days you barely moved. It's a record of your experience that no words ever captured. It disappears.

What You Can Do Right Now

This isn't hopeless. With planning, you can ensure your health data serves your family rather than vanishing.

1. Enroll in Apple's Digital Legacy Programme

Go to Settings → [Your Name] → Password & Security → Legacy Contact and designate someone you trust. They'll receive an access key to your Apple account after your death, including Health data. It takes three minutes.

2. Export Your Health Data Annually

Both Apple Health and Fitbit allow full data exports. Do this once a year, encrypt the file, and store it somewhere your family can access — ideally a secure encrypted vault.

In Apple Health: tap your profile photo → Export All Health Data. The archive contains your complete history as an XML file.

In Fitbit: go to Account settings → Data Export → Request Data.

3. Store Credentials Somewhere Your Family Can Find Them

Your health data is only useful if your family can actually access your accounts. A trusted person with documented credentials — or access to an encrypted vault — can make all the difference.

4. Decide Consciously What You Want

Not everyone wants their family to have access to a decade of their biometric data. Sleep patterns, stress levels, menstrual history — these are deeply personal. You have every right to let some data die with you.

But make that choice deliberately, not by default.

We are the first generation to leave behind a biological digital footprint — data describing not just what we owned or said, but how our bodies worked, rested, and struggled.

That data has medical, sentimental, legal, and financial value. Deciding what happens to it is part of modern estate planning — as important as your will.

If you wear a Garmin, a Fitbit, or an Apple Watch, you have a health archive your family might one day desperately need — and may never be able to access without your help.
