DigiD After Death: Why Your Dutch Digital Identity Dies With You

In the Netherlands, your DigiD is personal and non-transferable. When you die, it's deactivated—leaving your family locked out of vital government services. Here is how to prepare.

The Digital Ghost in the Machine

You’ve lived in the Netherlands for years. You use DigiD for everything: filing your taxes, checking your pension at Mijnpensioenoverzicht.nl, communicating with the SVB, and viewing your medical records. It is the heartbeat of your administrative life.

But here is the hard truth: Your DigiD dies when you do.

The moment your death is registered in the Basisregistratie Personen (BRP), the system triggers an automatic deactivation. Within days, your digital identity simply ceases to exist. If your partner or children were planning to log in as "you" to handle your affairs, they will be met with a cold "Account deactivated" message.

Why "Just Using the Password" Fails

Many couples share their DigiD login details. While this works during your lifetime, it becomes a major liability after death.

  1. Two-Factor Authentication (2FA): Most DigiD actions now require the DigiD app or an SMS code. If your phone is locked or the SIM card is deactivated, your family is blocked even if they have your password.
  2. Legal Fraud: Technically, using someone else’s DigiD—even a deceased spouse’s—is unauthorized access.
  3. The BRP Kill Switch: Once the municipality processes the death certificate, the DigiD is revoked at the source. The credentials simply stop working.

The Bureaucratic Nightmare That Follows

When your DigiD vanishes, your family loses the "easy button" for Dutch bureaucracy. They are forced onto the "slow path"—a world of paper forms, physical mail, and long phone queues.

1. The Tax Office (Belastingdienst)

Your final tax return (the 'F-form') must be completed. Without DigiD, your heirs cannot do this online. They must request a physical paper form, which can take weeks to arrive and even longer to process. If you were due a refund, it will be delayed.

2. Pensions and AOW

To see exactly what survivor benefits are available, your family needs to see your pension build-up. Without access to Mijnpensioenoverzicht, they are flying blind until the various pension funds eventually send physical letters—often months later.

3. Health Insurance and Records

Closing out a health insurance policy or accessing medical records for insurance claims becomes a manual process involving many phone calls to companies like Zilveren Kruis or VGZ, each requiring a physical copy of the death certificate.

4. The "Nabestaandenmachtiging" (Survivor's Authorization)

There is a "digital desk" for survivors (Digitaal loket voor nabestaanden), but even this requires the heirs to log in with their own DigiD and prove their relationship to you. If your heirs are outside the Netherlands (expats), they likely don't even have a DigiD to begin with.

The Expat Complication: A Double Lockdown

If you are an expat, the DigiD problem is amplified. Your family back home likely doesn't know what a DigiD is, let alone how to navigate the Dutch government’s "analog" backup routes.

They won't know your BSN (Citizen Service Number). They won't know which Waterschap (water board) you paid taxes to. They won't know where your pension is held. Without your DigiD to show them the map, they are lost in a foreign system in a language they don't speak.

How to Bypass the Digital Dead-End

You cannot "bequeath" your DigiD, but you can bequeath the information it protects. To save your family months of stress, you need to create a Physical & Digital Survival Kit.

1. Extract the Data Now

Don't wait for the crisis. Log into your DigiD services today and download:

  • Your latest Aangifte Inkomstenbelasting (Tax return).
  • Your latest Pensioenoverzicht (Pension summary from Mijnpensioenoverzicht.nl).
  • Your BSN (Citizen Service Number).
  • A list of your insurance providers.

2. The "In Case of Death" Folder

Store these PDFs in a secure, encrypted environment. A paper folder in a drawer is a start, but if your family is abroad or there’s a fire, it’s gone.

3. Designate an "Executor of Information"

Tell someone you trust exactly where these documents are. They don't need your DigiD if they already have the information the DigiD was protecting.
